Winter Squash

Heart of Gold Heart of Gold Squash

An early winter squash that combines a sweet dumpling with an acorn squash to produce a small acorn shaped vegetable. The outer skin is cream colored with dark green stripes covering a fine-grained inner flesh that is orange when ripe. This squash has a sweet rich flavor and can be baked, mashed or steamed. Store in a cool dry place for up to 6 months.

About Our CSA

EARTHSCAPE / FULL CIRCLE FARM CSA FOR 2012

Our Community Supported Agriculture (or CSA) endeavor began in 2004. We have a really good growing history ~ just ask our long-time share members! Except for a total crop failure with tomatoes in 2009 (a nation-wide problem), and the occasional in-short-supply vegetable, we have consistently proven our ability to grow a wide variety of foods with consistent quality and quantity.

One of the largest CSAs in Western Michigan changed their focus to a Farm-to-Table Restaurant this year, so we are growing to 60 shares for 2012 season.

Mike Jones and Patti Krielick are continuing to take an active role in management here. We have 2 new employees, Nic Parton and Carolyn Harper, with training and experience at the MSU Student Organic Farm, plus some returning help from last year. We plan to grow more!

We are offering similar variety with shares this year. You can choose a 16 week share for $425 for a single share or $800 for a double (2x most items) or a 20 week share for $525 for a single share or $1000 for a double. Payment is due by June 1st (payment plans are available if needed).

A 16 week share will begin the week of June 4th and go till the week of September 17th. A 20 week share will begin the week of May 21st and go till the week of October 1st. If you have vacation time planned and you let us know ahead of time, you can get a storage crop box at the end of the Season. Or you can donate your box to a friend or food pantry for the week / weeks you will be gone.

PICK UP DAY CHANGE: Pick up on the Farm will be Mondays 4-7pm, and Fridays from 6-8pm. We have a delivery to the Muskegon area on Monday evenings (North Muskegon exit at 4:35 and Glenside Sherman Blvd 5-6pm), and delivery to Sweetwater Local Foods Market on Saturday mornings 9-noon. There will be a $50 delivery fee for the season to either delivery location.

We encourage you to share pickups with other nearby families in order to save gas. We had groups from Fremont, Shelby, Muskegon and White Lake sharing pickups last year.

We will continue to be a bit flexible when you have special needs and we hope you will have the same patience with us.

We are still at the Sweetwater Market in Muskegon on Saturdays from 9-1 with the excess produce. In order to have 60 heads of lettuce harvestable in the same week, we will plant at least 100.

CSAs are continuing to gain in popularity. As the costs of energy and food prices rise, local food becomes an even greater value.

Week 11: Tomatoes! Melons! Either a Petite Yellow Watermelon or a Cantaloupe, Eggplant, Celery, Russet Potatoes, Either Beets with Greens or a Savoy Cabbage, Kale, Sweet Peppers, bags, Green Beans, Cucumbers, Summer Squash, Mint, Basil. And a Sunflower or two.

Week 10: a Sweet Pepper! Finally! Either Savoy Cabbage or Beets with greens (will reverse who gets these for next week); Carrots, Green Beans, Fresh pungent Onions, Cucumbers, Summer Squash, Chard or Summer Spinach, Basil or Dill.

Week 9: Red Norland Potatoes, Kale, Summer Squash, Cucumbers, either broccoli, beans or the last of the peas, fresh onions, garlic! and basil or dill.

Week 8: Beets with greens, Red Norland Potatoes, Some kind of green (Escarole, kale, chard or salad mix), Scallions, Peas, Summer Squash, Cucumbers, Carrots (Nelson and Danvers). And Friday / Saturday got Green Beans!

Week 7: Salad Mix, Broccoli to Muskegon deliveries, Peas!, Kale, a red or green cabbage, scallions, 1 summer squash, Basil, Fresh Garlic (remember to peel the cloves even though they might look like it isn't needed)

Week 6: Head

Week 5: Salad

Monday shares: Heirlooms including Cherokee, Black Prince, Golden Jubilee, Costoluto Genovese; Thursday and Saturday Heirlooms: Costulato Genovese, Black Prince, Cherokee Purple, Rose de Berne; Reds including Jet Star, Siletz, Glacier; Plums are mostly Heinz; Small including Juliets, Sweet 100, Sungold, Black Cherry; Sweet Corn! Celery, Beets with greens, Sweet Peppers, Hot Peppers for Muskegon Delivery only, Eggplant, Summer Squash, Cucumbers, Beans (Romano or Wax and Provider); Chard or Kale, Lettuce (the last of it for awhile), and carrots! Apologies to Thursday and Saturday shares for the not-so-pretty carrots. We are still struggling with good carrots this year.
Week 9: Monday gets Kale, carrots and eggplant! 2 heads of lettuce, Red Norland potatoes, green beans, cucumbers, summer squash (try grilling some!), sweet and hot peppers (see note on blog), still just a few tomatoes, garlic. Whoops, we forgot the hot peppers to the Muskegon crew. Will send them next week.
Week 8: 2 Heads of lettuce, Sugar Snap Peas, Snow peas, shelling peas, onions (these are not cured; they should be refrigerated); green beans, cucumbers, summer squash, green pepper and a purple or yellow pepper; Tomatoes! Medium sized Yellow Taxi and Red Glacier or Siletz. The small tomatoes are Sungold, Super Sweet 100 and Juliet. Thursday and Saturday shares also got kale, carrots and an eggplant!
Week 7 ~ Monday: Snow Peas (just take the stems off), Green Beans, Radishes, Broccoli, scallions, Salad Mix, Cabbage, Red Norland Potatoes, GARLIC! This is fresh garlic - even tho it looks like there are no peels, it still has to be peeled; Cucumber, Summer Squash, and a green pepper or tomato! Thursday and Saturday also got Sugar Snap Peas! Remove the strings and stem and then eat them raw or cook them any way you like.
Week 6: Monday: Shelling Peas, kohlrabi, scallions, head lettuce, salad mix, broccoli, 1 little summer squash to get the stir-fry going, Swiss Chard. Thursday has the same veggies with the addition of green beans instead of shelling peas for some shares, and all get snow peas and a cucumber!
Week 5: New Potatoes! These are Red Norlands, a favorite variety. Head lettuce, Salad Mix, Raddichio, Scallions, Kohlrabi, Beets with Greens to Monday shares, Dill. Thursday and Saturday shares got carrots and the first picking of peas! ~ either flat snow peas or plump shelling peas.
Week 4: Salad Greens, 2 Heads of Lettuce, Scallions, Kohlrabi, Spinach- the last of it, a head of cabbage, Kale and Chard to some shares, Dill. Monday shares get carrots and broccoli! Thursday shares get beets with greens.
Week 3: Salad Greens, 2 Heads of Lettuce, Radishes, Scallions, Kohlrabi, Spinach (might be the last week for Spinach), Turnips with greens! Garlic Scapes and a small bouquet of my favorite flowers - Sweet Williams.

Week 18: Sweet Potatoes, Delicata winter squash, and a pie pumpkin for 16 week shares (the rest of you will get them in a week or 2); Butternut Squash, Heart of Gold squash, celeriac, parsnips, Masai Filet Beans, Leeks, Music Garlic! Eggplant, Sweet Peppers, Little decorative pumpkins - do not eat them- and Acorn Squash for Monday / Tuesday (we shorted you last week as we didn't have many harvested yet); Hot peppers and Herbs are optional.

Week 15: Russet Potatoes, Red Onions, Beets with not as pretty greens for Monday/Tuesday; Swiss Chard for Thursday/Saturday, Kale, Eggplant, Sweet Peppers - mostly reds of various kinds; Watermelon; NOT hot Jalapenos, the last of the summer squashes, Tomatoes (winding down), Basil, Rosemary. Hot Peppers are optional.
Week 14: Satina Potatoes for Mon/Tues, Red Golds for Thurs/Sat; Leeks, Muskemelon, sweet peppers, eggplant, large, medium and small tomatoes plus heirlooms, beans, summer squashes, cabbage, Swiss Chard for Mon/Tues, Beets with greens for Thurs / Sat.; optional: hot peppers, herbs

Week 9: Sweet Corn! Week 8: Fresh Yellow Onions (store in a dry place or the refrig); garlic; green beans, carrots, hot and sweet peppers, beets with greens, summer squash, cucumbers, eggplant, French fingerlings, Tomatoes. YUM! Thursday / Saturday addition: a head of lettuce: either Anuenue, Michelle or Red Sails
Week 7: Monday / Tuesday: Head Lettuce, Kale, Green Beans! Potatoes (see blogpost), Sweet Peppers, some odd shapes and colors, Summer Squash, Wax White Onions, Cucumbers, an oriental cucumber, cabbage, carrots, Sugar snap peas and either snow or shelling peas, fresh garlic (yes, peel the cloves even tho they don't look like they need it.) Eggplant, beets with greens, scallions, and TOMATOES! Thursday / Saturday: Yellow onions - fresh, store them in a dry place as they are not cured; No potatoes, white onions, carrots, peas, garlic or beets as you got these last week.
Week 6: Monday/Tuesday: Scallions, Head Lettuce (Red Sails, Anuenue, Michelle), Broccoli spears, Radishes, Chard. 3 kinds of peas today! Yay! The Sugar Snap peas have a label on the bags telling how to prepare them. The flat pods are snow peas, all edible, and the other fat pods are shelling peas and have to be shelled to eat (pods are inedible). Pea Candy! A head of green cabbage (this will store well in your refrigerator for a week or 2). Summer Squash. Dill; Thursday & Saturday: Mixed Salad Greens, radishes, scallions, broccoli, chard, 3 kinds of peas (sugar snaps have labels, flat pods are snow peas, all edible, and the other fat pods are shelling peas and have to be shelled to eat); Summer squash, cucumber, sweet pepper, the first tomatoes!, carrots, potatoes, garlic, small white onions! Please let me know if you haven't gotten raddichio yet.
Week 5: Monday/Tuesday Either flat snow peas or plump shelling peas (pod is not edible), scallions, Head Lettuce (Red Sails, Anuenue, Michelle), Mixed Salad Greens, Broccoli spears, Turnips for the doubles, Turnip greens for everyone else. The turnip roots are not doing well this year ~sorry! Radishes, snapdragons, Kale. Thursday / Saturday: both kinds of peas today! Yay! A head of green cabbage (this will store well in your refrigerator for a week or 2). Beets with greens. Eat the greens soon, and the beets will also store for a few weeks. Remember, no shares next week. Your next CSA days are July 9 & 11.
Week 4: Chinese Cabbage, Carrots, Scallions, Head lettuces - Anuenue and another kind, Mixed Salad Greens, the last of the Spinach, the last Kohlrabi for awhile, broccoli, and some herbs are available. Thursday shares get peas! Either flat snow peas, or plump shelling peas (inedible pods). More to come next week for all!
Week 3, Monday and Tuesday: Salad Mix, Spinach, Kohlrabi, Turnip greens or turnip roots with greens, scallions, head lettuce; radishes, garlic scapes. Kale! and Some shares get broccoli! 16 week shares will get a parsley plant and a scrub brush. Thursday/Saturday, No radishes or scapes as you got them last week.
Week 2, Monday and Tuesday: Salad Mix, Spinach, Kohlrabi, Turnip greens for double shares, turnips with greens for singles, fresh oregano, scallions, pak choi, head lettuce (either Buttercrunch Bibb or Michelle Batavian). Thursday / Saturday: the same except the head lettuces will be Waldemann's Green Leaf Lettuce or Michelle. 16 week shares will get a parsley plant and a scrub brush. Oh, addendum: the later week shares also got radishes and garlic scapes. Some of the weekly shares got broccoli! We will make it up to those of you who didn't.
Week 1! In your share box this week: Spinach, Leaf Lettuces, Head Lettuce, Pak Choi, Scallions, Radishes - 3 different kinds, Chives have flowered and can go in a vase or be eaten, all but the harder stems. I usually pull out the flowers and then only eat the softer stems. Double duty. A Parsley plant, and a veggie scrubbing brush

Last week of 2009 CSA ~~ Week 18: mixed fingerlings (French, Russian and Purple Peruvian), red onions, garlic, winter squashes, carrots, celeriac, green beans or rattlesnake pole beans, cabbages, broccoli or cauliflower, parsnips, green and colored sweet peppers, summer squash, celery for Monday/Tuesday, chard or kale, SWEET POTATOES! Herbs and hot peppers if you want some.

Week 17: Russet Potatoes, Leeks, Scallions, Red onions, Garlic (Music variety, our favorite!), Winter Squash- Heart of Gold variety, Cauliflower, Lettuce Mix, Grenoble beans, Summer squash, broccoli, Sweet Peppers, Eggplant, Kohlrabi, Kale or Chard; Thursday only: Celery and Beets with Greens; herbs, hot peppers and flowers are available.

Week 16: Please return containers. Red Norland and White Kennebec Potatoes, Red and Yellow onions, Cauliflower, Lettuce Mix or Romaine lettuce, Jade & Grenoble beans, squash and cucumbers, broccoli, Carrots, Sweet Peppers and finally some red ones! Eggplant, Beets with greens for Monday/Tuesday, Silver Queen Sweet Corn, Radishes or Kohlrabi, Watermelon and Cantaloupe and Muskmelon, herbs, hot peppers and flowers are available.

Week 15: Fingerling Potatoes, Leeks, Scallions, Lettuce Mix for Monday/Tuesday, Romaine lettuce for Thursday, Jade beans, squash and cucumbers, broccoli for Earthly Kneads, Sweet Peppers, Eggplant, Sweet Corn, Tomatillos and Celery for Thursday, Radishes for some shares, Watermelon and Cantaloupe and Muskmelon, herbs, hot peppers and flowers are available.

Week 14: Kennebec Potatoes, Onions (Red & yellow), Garlic, Jade beans, squash, cucumbers, celery for MON/TUES, broccoli for TH, chard, sweet peppers, a purple pepper (or mild jalapeno, yellow, or Jimmy Nardello), Eggplant, Sweet corn - mostly Incredible with some Tuxedo & Kandy Korn, Radishes for some of you (gotta have something red!), tomatillos for MON/TUES, a few small tomatoes, salad mix for THURS. Some melons for everyone.

Week 13: More sweet corn! Eggplant, sweet peppers, some hot peppers (marked bag), a few tomatoes (so sad today looking at the patch), Fingerling potatoes, Leeks, garlic, Masai filet beans (these don't seem as tender as usual to me), squash and cucumbers, kale, broccoli for Mon / Tues; Beets with Greens for TH

Week 12: Sweet Corn! A large tomato or a cantaloupe, small tomatoes (more of them this week), Red Norland Potatoes, Onions, Masai filet green beans (a gourmet variety that takes more time to pick and grow but is so yummy!), squash and cukes, beets with greens for M-TU (new planting), chard or kale, celery for M-TU, salad mix or head lettuce, sweet peppers and a purple pepper (a few people got a hot banana wax pepper), eggplant, broccoli for TH, gladiolas, dill heads and other herbs available if desired.

Week 11: German Extra Hardy Garlic bulbs, Sweet Peppers, Eggplant or a Purple Pepper, Fingerling Potatoes, Leeks, Broccoli for Mon/Tue, Celery for TH, Green Beans, lots of Summer Squash and Cucumbers, Head Lettuce or Mixed Lettuce, Tomatoes (still only the early greenhouse-started ones), kohlrabi, bunches of basil, Gladiolas or sunflowers.

Week 10: 3# Red Gold (Monday - Tuesday) and Red gold & Norland (Thursday) potatoes, early onions, kale and chard, summer squash, cucumbers, tomatoes and eggplant (M, TU) radishes (TH), green beans, head lettuce, celery (M & TUES); Monday/Tuesday either snow peas, carrots or some other mystery veggie; Thursday got sweet peppers & salad mix!

Week 9: Head lettuce, salad mix, a cabbage (red or green), Green beans, kohlrabi, Satina potatoes, Rainbow Carrots, summer squash, cucumbers, celery, beets with greens, either broccoli or snow peas, onions, Sunflowers for Monday/Tuesday; Tomatoes, kale and radishes for Thursday

Week 8: Small early onions, Russian fingerling potatoes, cucumber, summer squash, green beans, cabbage (either Savoy curly or Gonzalez smooth), Buttercrunch Bibb head lettuce, chard; Monday / Tuesday snap peas, Salad Mix, either shelling peas or snow peas, celery; Kohlrabis for Earthly Kneads; Thursday: Sunflowers, basil, kohlrabis.

Week 7: Scallions, Beets, Head Lettuces, Salad Mix, Carrots for Monday/Tuesday, Red Norland new potatoes, fresh garlic (still needs to be peeled, even tho it looks like it doesn't), summer squash, a cucumber! broccoli, snow peas, shelling peas, sugar snap peas (all labeled); bunches of dill, basil for Earthly Kneads boxes, and celery for Thursday! and I think that's all!

Week 6: Thursday: Scallions, summer squash, chard, shelling peas, sugar snap peas, snow peas, broccoli, salad mix, head lettuce, carrots, dill bunches; Monday & Tuesday: Salad Mix, head lettuce (Romaine or Winter Density), Snow peas or shelling peas, Chinese Cabbage to Monday shares (everyone should have gotten some now), Beets with greens, Turnips and chard to Monday shares, broccoli, Kohlrabis to Tuesday shares, scallions, the first summer squashes to Tuesday shares

Week 5: Salad Mix, head lettuce (either Romaine or Winter Density Bibb), 1 # carrots!, garlic scapes!, Scallions & Kale to Monday/Tuesday shares, Radishes, kohlrabis to Monday shares; Chinese Cabbage to Earthly Kneads delivered shares & Thursday shares, broccoli to Monday and Thursday; Beets with greens to Thursday.

Week 4: Romaine head lettuce, radishes, green garlic, chard for Monday/Tuesday; salad mix; kohlrabis; pak choi; scallions & turnips with greens for Thursday!

Week 3: Anuenue head lettuce, Romaine for Thursdays, escarole for double shares, mixed salad greens, pak choi or kale Mondays, Kale or chard Thursdays, green garlic and radishes Thursdays, scallions, dill, spinach

Week 2: Salad Mix, spinach, head lettuce - Anuenue or Winter Density, fresh oregano.

Week 1: a parsley plant, my favorite scrub brush, mixed salad greens, spinach, radishes, chives, green garlic, pak choi, Winter Density head lettuce

Sweet Pepper, Hot Peppers, Tomatoes, Summer Squash, Sugar Peas, Onions, Garlic, Red Potatoes, Red Cabbage, Green Cabbage, Head Lettuce, Mixed Salad Greens, Swiss Chard, Green Beans, Cucumbers, Flowers, Herbs

Hot Peppers, Red and White Onions, Green Beans, Summer Squash, Cucumbers, Tomatoes including an Heirloom, Sweet Peppers, Savoy Cabbage, Chard, Broccoli, Eggplant, Gladiolas, Optional: Endive, Arugula, Herbs, other Flowers
